The action of the play takes place in the remote Ukranian village of Kolenchakov which for years has been under the Youskevitch curse that makes all born there a prisoner of the village and stupid too boot. Hense, "FOOLS!"
Only if a Zubritsky marries a Youskevitch can the curse be broken. But the only Zubritsky left isn't smart enough to accept a daily proposal from the horrible Count Youskevitch. The mere mention of his name causes all to tremble. And; consider the newly arrived teacher, who still has possession of his intellegence, is in love with the beautiful Sophia and wants to marry her. But, he has little time left for he will also become a stupid fool in a matter of hours unless he can teach Sophia to learn to love him and at the same time foil the wicked Count and the terrible curse.
Originally produced in New York at the O'Neill Theatre in the spring of 1981 with Mike Nichols as director.
