The entire play takes place in the Victorian Brewster home in Brooklyn, NY. Time: an autumn in the mid 1940's. The play is written to be performed in three (3) acts.
This considered classic opened at the Fulton Theatre, Broadway August 18, 1941. Starring Josephine Hull as Abby, Allyn Joslyn as Mortimer, and Boris Karloff as Jonathan.
The movie version a few years later directed by Frank Capra, returned Ms. Hull as Abby with Cary Grant as Mortimer. Raymond Massey replaced Karloff as Jonathan and Peter Lorre finally played the part written for him - Dr. Herman Einstein.
Two lovely old ladies help lonely old men reach their final reward by serving them elderberry wine laced with arsenic. After years of providing their charitable function for society they are found out by their famous nephew who gets caught up in the murderous mess. When their demented nephew Jonathan returns home looking for a safe haven to hide from the police the mayhem escalates as insanity runs rampant throughout.
